Established in 2009.
Elevate Yoga has been a part of the Hazlet commUNITY since 2009. Founded by mother-daughter team Jamie Hanley and Diana Segal, Elevate thrived as a safe space for people to come learn the basics and more advanced practices of yoga.
Elevate has hosted teacher trainings, workshops with globally recognized teachers, soulful gatherings, fundraisers, many free classes, has attended commUNITY events, has taught yoga in schools, the list goes on. Being around for 11 years, we are extremely proud of the work Elevate has done to teach yoga and wellness.
Elevate recently took on new ownership in January 2020 when Jamie and Diana passed the torch to Alicia Somma-Hodgskin, who received training and found her voice as a teacher at Elevate. Read more about how Alicia joined the team in 2011 and her road to taking on this exciting new role here.
Alicia has a clear vision for what lies ahead for Elevate. You can read the entirety of that vision here, suffice to say we will continue to grow and serve. We are honored to do what we do and we will strive to bring the teachings and practices of yoga, mindfulness, meditation, relaxation, holistic nutrition, reiki, and all types of healing to our cOMmunity.
Since March 2020, we have been holding all classes online via Zoom. We are still a strong group of yogis and we come together each week to transcend the space and join together in our communal intention. As the world moves through the COVID19 pandemic, Elevate will move along safely. Link up to our Facebook and Instagram, and be sure to sign up for our emails to stay up to date with the latest Elevate news.
We can’t wait to all be together again in our beautiful little sacred space. We know it will be in divine time.
Namaste! Thank you so much for being here!!!!
A commUNITY where all of our humanness is shared. A sacred space where people come to relieve their stress, learn that it’s okay to stop carrying the weight of their life around with them, trust us to take a break from all of their roles, and just be.
Elevate is a space of healing, of relearning our true nature. We gather together here to crack open our hardened hearts that have been made so by the nature of our violent world, and we come to recognize that WE ARE ONE. We are loving awareness.
There is support at Elevate. We are there for our students to navigate the heaviness of yogic philosophy, to celebrate their bodies, to laugh with them when they fall out of balancing poses, to love and embrace themselves. We’re there to remind them that their bodies are beautiful no matter their shape, color, or ability. Elevate is there to hold space for them in their darkest hour and shine the light on how powerful they truly are.
We welcome all people, and everyone feels our warmth. We are an inclusive studio. We have diversity. Regardless of social status or financial ability, we have something for everyone. Elevate’s loving arms will wrap around our community and let everyone know it’s okay to be exactly who they are.
We remind our students that we too feel anxiety, uncertainty, depression, confusion, fear, and everything else that is heaped on us at birth and in childhood. We aren’t there to eliminate any inevitable part of their human condition, we are there to give them the tools of the yoga practice that they need to deal with it.
We are no better than anyone who walks through our doors, no matter how many certifications we have or how much knowledge we’ve accrued. Yoga has shown us how to navigate this big scary world as a tiny human and we are simply here to guide our brothers and sisters in the same way. All beliefs, uncertainties, skepticism, and doubt are embraced here. Like spaghetti on a wall, we throw it out there and see what sticks. We honor that not all students will resonate with our teachings, and it’s okay. As a team, we come together and offer the community a little something different with each class.
When class commences, that is the students’ time to be with their own body and mind, to reveal spirit, to work with their sankalpa, their inner resolve. The classes aren’t about us, and we happily take ego out of our teachings. We keep everyone safe in their sacred bodies and help them to honor exactly where they are. We teach them to breathe and accept each pose in their own beautiful and unique shape. It isn’t about us, it’s about THEM. We recognize that it is not their responsibility to applaud us, congratulate us, or even thank us at the end of class. We do what we do because it is our dharma, our truth. We let people float in and out of the studio and trust that when they are ready, they will be here; we can’t make them stay.
We are sensitive to all trauma, past experiences, personalities, and preferences. We are only there to make the students time more easeful. We don’t have to touch everyone, or anyone for that matter. It isn’t about us. This is our service, and we are honored and grateful to do what we do.
Elevate is a warm and welcoming space where all people come to heal in any way they need to, physically, energetically, mentally, spiritually. We are simple guides, simple space holders. This doesn’t mean knowing the intimate details of our students lives, it means bearing witness to their journey as a soul in a human body. We help them to get to the Self. We honor the true meaning of namaste.
People leave our classes and sessions with open hearts, increased awareness, and gratitude. We have made their time in our sacred space something special for them to infuse into the rest of their day, and hopefully touch those around them. Elevate is the center point for a greater ripple of love and light in a world that so desperately needs it.
Meet the Owner
Hi, I’m Alicia :)
Thank you so much for being here! I am so deeply grateful for the presence of each person who becomes even a small part of our commUNITY :)
I first came to Elevate in 2011 as a Holistic Health Coach. Having been trained at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, I asked the founder and owner of Elevate at the time if I could come to the studio and offer a free nutrition workshop. Jamie couldn’t have been a kinder or more welcOMing presence. She opened her doors and heart and helped me to deepen my practice and eventually become a yoga teacher!
I had been meditating on my own since the year 2005 and had practiced yoga somewhat regularly since 2003. When I came to Elevate though, it all changed. Suddenly, I wasn’t sitting by myself practicing my meditation and I wasn’t learning from a screen; I was an active part of a commUNITY that gathered together with this beautiful communal intention. Practicing together as one and meeting other yogis was a revelation to me. It felt so good to get to know other humans who were coming to the mat to learn, just like I was.
I took my 500+ hours of teacher training in 2012 and 13 and after teaching at many studios in the area, began teaching full time at Elevate in 2014. Elevate had become my hOMe and I loved having a complete schedule with such special students who had a deep passion for learning more. I became voracious for yogic text, podcasts, films, classes, anything I could get my hands on to then give back to the students of Elevate. I began telling stories of my life, how I live my yoga, as I ventured through marriage and the birth of our daughter River Daisy. My connection with this commUNITY just kept deepening and unfolding into this beautiful and profound presence in my life.
So, when Jamie made the decision to pass Elevate into my hands after loving it with her whole heart for 10 years, I knew this was an incredible gift I could never turn down. This role of taking care of Elevate has been in the making for me for a long time. This is certainly my dharma. Every single day I watch this part of my life grow and I become more grateful.
Thank you all so very much for allowing me to live of service in this way. Louise Hay has a positive affirmation: “world peace begins with ME” and I truly believe it. We all must take our own actions and live in a way that we become the center point of a ripple of peace. I truly believe in the healing power of yoga and meditation and I am honored to do what we do here. My vow is to serve every beautifully unique heart and soul that comes into our sacred space. Thank you all so very much for being here. The light in me serves and honors the light in you. Namaste :)
